The International Harp Festival returns to the San Damiano Retreat Center in the beautiful hillside town of Danville, CA, May 25 - 29, 2017.

In 2017 you can look forward to:

  • Daily classes in tracks geared specifically to the beginning, intermediate and advanced players that build on the material presented the previous day.

  • Two special seminars covering Teaching Tactics and Performance, designed for advanced students, teachers, and anyone interested in beginning a performing or teaching career or taking it to the next level.

  • Internationally acclaimed artists and presenters to educate, motivate and inspire you.

  • Classes for both the pedal and non-pedal player covering a wide range of topics including musical composition, editing and arranging, Celtic and world music, modal improvisation, playing expressively,  jazz, working with composers, and more.

  • Nightly concerts spanning musical styles from Bach to Bebop, World Sounds and Celtic Music. 

  • A mid-day break to nap, take a walk in the surrounding gardens and hillside trails, play in casual harp jams or do yoga and other Healthy Harpist exercises.

Principal Harpist of the San Diego Symphony, Julie Ann Smith is one of the most prominent young American harpists today, performing as both an orchestral musician and concert artist. Silver medalist winner in the 2004 USA International Harp Competition and Bronze medalist in 2001, she made her National Symphony Orchestra debut in 2003 and has been honored in numerous competitions throughout the United States. | | Ms. Smith regularly performs as a recitalist and soloist with orchestra. Her appearances include multiple performances with the San Diego Symphony, the New World Symphony Orchestra, the West Los Angeles Symphony, the South Dakota Symphony, the Corpus Christi Symphony Orchestra, and the Cleveland Institute of Music Orchestra, to name a few. She has been the opening recitalist for the 2006 American Harp Society National Conference, the 2007 USA International Harp Competition, and Guest Artist for the 2010 Young Artist Harp Seminar in Rabun Gap, GA. | | Ms. Smith is equally experienced as a chamber and orchestral musician. A founding member of the San Diego-based Myriad Trio, she regularly appears in chamber concerts and has performed abroad in Italy, Japan and Taiwan. Her festival credentials include the Bay Chamber, Mainly Mozart, and Tanglewood Music Festivals, the National Repertory Orchestra, Spoleto USA Festival, and the Pacific Music Festival in Japan. As an orchestral musician, she has served as Acting Principal Harpist of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra (2006-07), Principal Harpist for the New World Symphony Orchestra (2004-06), and was the winner of the 2011 Lyric Opera Principal Harp audition. | | Ms. Smith is an avid promoter and performer of new music. Several pieces have been written and premiered by Ms. Smith including Cactus, a double concerto for harp and violin written by Michael Torke (premiered by the San Diego Symphony Orchestra), The Eye of Night for flute, viola and harp by David Bruce (premiered by The Myriad Trio), and Sonata, a trio for flute, viola and harp by Jeremy Cavaterra, to be debuted by The Myriad Trio in April of 2013. | | An active teacher, Ms. Smith is Adjunct Faculty at the University of San Diego and maintains a private harp studio in San Diego working with students of all ages on both lever and pedals harps.
